GPS tracker

GPS tracker 1GPS tracker

Any hunter who works with a hunting dog on a stand knows the importance of today's dog GPS tracker. Having a GPS tracker means having the perfect tool to communicate with your sidekick, even when it's far ahead of you. Read how to operate the device and what we offer at Favia Hunting Store.

GPS tracker - the story

From the time that training the hunting dog working a stand when hunting ground birds began, hunters have been able to understand that when hunting in congested areas, there must be something to indicate that the dog is on a stand. And so, the first primitive GPS tracker for a dog turned out to be the bell. When the dog moves in congested sections, the bell makes a steady sound, and when the sound stops, the hunter realizes that the dog has stopped in front of the game. At the time, they preferred dogs working at closer range, so the bell did a good enough job for its time.

Later, an audible notification device, the so-called beeper, appeared. It has the option of announcing the location of the search dog at intervals with an audible signal. When the dog stops in front of the game, the beeper produces a steady melody without pause, which may be the same one we have with pause, or another, depending on the device.

As technology advances, an advanced beeper one has emerged that is equipped with a remote control. This allows us to completely control the sound we choose, and the vibration and sound of the remote gives us a signal when the dog is on stand. It is these devices that gave the idea for the making of today's GPS tracker.

What is a GPS tracker

What is a GPS tracker 1What is a GPS tracker

A GPS tracker is a device that gives us information about a dog's location and movements within a radius of 20 km. When we have it, we can afford to work with dogs at a greater distance and work outside the sound barrier of the bells, which is no more than 30 m.

On the screen of each GPS tracker you will see all the information about the direction and distance to the dog's location, as well as whether the dog is moving or on stand. Modern TEC2 systems are now fitted with a voice notification that the dog is on a stand, also telling you the distance to the location in meters.

Application of the GPS tracker for hunting ground birds

Application of the GPS tracker for hunting ground birds 1Application of the GPS tracker for hunting ground birds

A GPS tracker may be your most indispensable assistant when hunting ground birds, after the dog, of course. The main purpose of the systems, which have become increasingly popular over the last 15-20 years, is to be an essential accessory when hunting snipe, pheasant, partridge and other ground bird species. The GPS tracker is a tool that informs you exactly where your helper is at any given moment. The vibration or beep indicates exactly where the dog is on stand. With a GPS tracker, you get the ability to see at any moment at what distance the dog is and what part of the area it has searched. A good hunting dog should search 80% of the hunting area. There are different types of GPS tracker on the market and they all have identical functions, but with the TEK 1,1.5 and 2 dog GPS tracker we can observe when the dog cheats the game (culling). The display indication on your GPS tracker will be an arrow when moving and a circle when standing. When they alternate, it means that the dog is not blocking the game or that the game is on the move.

Applications of a GPS tracker in congested areas

The other application of the GPS tracker is when chasing game from dense areas (forest, bushes, reeds). In such cases it is convenient to have a GPS tracker for a hound dog. When the dog chases the game, thanks to the GPS tracker we can track it at a distance of up to 20 km. When the dog holds or finds a big game (mostly pigs) and barks on the spot, our GPS tracker signals us that the dog barks on the spot. On the screen of our dog GPS tracker we will see both the direction and the distance to the dog. The GPS tracker is primarily used by so-called chasers.

Calibration of the GPS tracker

In the case of the TEC models 1,5 and 2 GPS tracker, the device must be calibrated before each outing. You will see on your GPS tracker an integrated circuit that shows 3 circles. When rotating our GPS tracker, we calibrate these 3 points so that they stand in a line. When we do this, we wait 3 to 5 seconds until we hear a beep. It is proof that our GPS tracker is calibrated. Then in the home panel of our GPS tracker we will see the distance between us and the dog correctly.

This is done whenever possible whenever we go out hunting, because usually any GPS tracker is uncalibrated and may give us the opposite direction. It is therefore advisable to always check the calibration option after switching on the device.

This is done by going into the menu of the respective GPS tracker and going to the compass option. Then, with the joystick arrow on our GPS tracker, we go to the right. There we have 3 options, the last one being calibration. Again, with the joystick, we move to the right and we go to the calibration integrated circuit on the GPS tracker. Those 3 circles we described above should be in a line. This way our GPS tracker will work correctly every time.

How to work comfortably with a GPS tracker

When working with a GPS tracker, it is advisable to wear an outer garment (hunting vest). It should be of signal colors and have convenient pockets for carrying the device. We recommend that you choose outerwear models with large pockets so that it is easy to put on and take off your GPS tracker.
